chris-hendryInstitute Director – Dr Chris Hendry

Chris has been a nurse and a midwife in New Zealand for over 30 years, having worked in a variety of settings and roles throughout the country. Since the late 1990s Chris has provided consultancy services to DHBs, the Ministry of Health and DHBNZ, while working part time as a postgraduate lecturer, initially at Victoria University, then Otago Poltytechnic. Chris’s doctoral research focused on exploring the complexity of service provision by rural community based midwives.

In 2007 Chris helped to establish the NZ Institute of Community care to provide a centre of excellence for research and development projects in community health services and is now the Director of the Institute. As the Institute Director, Chris provides leadership and guidance to researchers interested in completing research projects that explore community based health service issues. Chris is also responsible for networking with agencies that are keen to partner in research and development activities.

jackie-walkerResearch Nurse – Jackie Walker

Jackie has been a nurse for over 30 years, working in NZ and overseas, primarily in the areas of mental health, general medicine, oncology and palliative care. Jackie worked in nursing education in the polytechnic and DHB sector for over 15 years before returning to clinical practice. She has always been a passionate advocate for nursing research and is currently working with staff at Nurse Maude who are completing research, audit and service development projects.

As the Institute Research Nurse, Jackie is responsible for the management of each major research project, for providing education around research, and consultancy. Jackie is often the first point of contact for nurses who have an interest in searching for evidence to inform practice.

beth-tindallInstitute Administrator – Beth Tindall

Beth is a graduate and has been an Office Manager and Personal Assistant for the last 15 years in both New Zealand and the UK, covering many aspects of administration.

As the Institute Administrator, Beth provides all administrative support for the Institute including formatting of all funding and research applications; receiving all donations; managing the accounts for research projects and assisting with resources.

karen-betonyProject Nurse – Karen Betony

Karen worked in the UK as a District Nursing Sister for nearly 10 years before becoming a lecturer delivering theoretical and clinical practice components relating to primary care. Karen has a long lasting passion and commitment to district nursing and home based health care and remains a strong advocate in this area.

Since moving to New Zealand in 2007, Karen has worked at Nurse Maude for over 3 years as a nurse educator for community nursing.

At the Institute, Karen has a temporary role working as project nurse on the Ministry of Health funded Nurses Utilisation of Evidence to Inform Practice project.

frances westData Analyst – Frances West

Frances has a Master's of Science and has been an analyst for nineteen years. Frances has previously worked for Statistics NZ, Livestock Improvement and most recently with CDHB Planning and Funding. Frances has a passion for data, she enjoys investigating datasets, and presenting data in ways which makes it easy to understand and therefore accessible. As the institute analyst, Frances analyses data for reports, assists with the preparation of reports and provides analytical support to the other members of the team.
